The 2 times I've tried to sell the scopes I barely got my money back, so I stopped trying (I'm not very patient, I admit). On my server the gems go for about 30 while the scopes sell for 70, so counting the ore too... not very profitable. But I admit that 450 was never my goal, I just wanted to craft my goggles.

The first time I started making heartseeker scopes they didn't really sell...

Now that everyone is 80 and hunters are looking for their nesingwary's and scopes, I'm guessing now would be the best time to sell them?

Also, for my fellow engineers who need some cash but can't seem to make it with the profession, I've come up with a way to make a few hundred gold just standing around dalaran.

First: Make a bunch of macros that advertise your enginnering. A lot of people just do "[Enchanting, Engineering, Alchemy] LFW" but I've found that if you make it like a catchy/funny advertising slogan, you get a lot more customers/future customers. An example that I have is something like: "There isn't enough violence in the world, and I'm here to make more of it! Visit Branflake's [Engineering] for all of your violence-making needs!"

I've crafted a few guns this way and the level 450 guns I've been able to craft for as high as 100g. One guy on my server even payed me in shards and dust which I later used for enchants on my weapons.

One last nugget of knowledge: NEVER SELL MOTORCYCLES. Offer to make them if the materials are supplied to you, but never try to actually sell one, especially on the AH.

Yes you can make the goggles at 440, but the guide is intended to get to 450, so if you put off making them to 450, your more likely to get a skill up then (since they are still yellow) than some the scopes that are recommended.

The army knives take the same amount of ore as the scope, but the resale value is pitiful compared to the scope. So you use the gems to craft something more marketable than the army knives. The guide is intended to reduce the total cost of leveling engineering after the resale value of the item. If you prefer lower upfront cost then yes it is a better option, but if you want to recoup most of your gold, then the scopes will give you a better return/resale value, possibly even a profit.

Thank you for your comment though, it can help those who dont have a pressing need to get to 450 or want a cheaper upfront cost of getting to 450.

Actually, you can make the epic goggles at 440 skill, you only need 450 for the epic guns and the motorcycle.

I also think making Gnomish Army Knives is much better than most of the options, since you only pay for some cheapo skinning/mining etc tools and another reagent.
