Mining Leveling Guide with Smelting 1-450
Mining can be pretty lucrative since it is used for 3 professions. However you need to reach a high level in order to make some decent gold off the profession.
Most guides give you the maps, zones and type of ore to look for while leveling. But what if you want to just level it as quick as possible or you have a Death Knight that you want a profession on? The quickest way is to smelt you way up.
Now it isn’t the cheapest way to level. But you can make more gold in the time you saved from smelting (instead of looking for nodes) than you lose on buying the ore. Also on most servers, the bars sell for around the same price as the ore.
How to level with smelting is pretty straight forward:
1. Buy ore off the Auction House that will give you levels (try to pick an AH that has a forge nearby like Thunder Bluff).
2. Smelt it.
3. List the bars up for sale.
4. Continue to the next type of ore.
However if you want to plan ahead and save up ore, you can look at the guide below and it will show you the level range, the ore that is most likely to level you, and finally the color range for each ore with Mining level gains.
(If you rather level the traditional way of looking for nodes check out my Mining Leveling Guide.)

Level |
Ore to Smelt |
Skill Color |
Comments |
1-65 |
Copper |
1 25 47 70 |
65-75 |
Tin |
- 65 70 75 |
Smelt Tin till gray, you will want as many tin bars as copper bars for the next step. |
76-115 |
Bronze |
- 65 90 115 |
Smelt Bronze bars until gray. Even if you don’t get a skill up each time, it is usually cheaper than 1 silver smelt. However if you have access to cheap silver ore, you can skip to the next level at any time. |
115-125 |
Silver |
75 115 122 130 |
125-155 |
Iron |
125 130 145 160 |
155-175 |
Gold |
155 170 177 185 |
Gold Ore can be a little difficult to obtain |
175-230 |
Mithril |
- 175 202 230 |
230-250 |
Truesilver |
230 235 242 250 |
250-290 |
Thorium |
- 250 270 290 |
290-300 |
This is one level range you cannot avoid looking for nodes. You will need to hit either 10 thorium nodes ( I recommend Silithus due to lack of people usually in that zone) or farm 5, get a gathering enchant on a pair of gloves and then mine 5 Fel Iron nodes in Hellfire. |

300-315 |
Fel Iron |
- 300 307 315 |
315-325 |
Another time where you cannot avoid looking for nodes. You will need to get to 325 which should be rather easy, since you can use a flying mount. Look for Fel iron nodes in Hellfire. |

325-340 |
Adamantite |
- 325 332 340 |
340-350 |
Another time where you cannot avoid looking fornodes. You will need to get to 350 which should be rather easy, since you canuse a flying mount. Look for Adamantite nodes in Nagrand. |
350-375 |
Cobalt |
- 350 362 375 |
375-400 |
You will have to look for nodes for these levels I recommend looking for Cobalt and Rich Cobalt in Borean Tundra. |
400-450 |
You will have to look for nodes for these levels. I recommend looking for Saronite and Rich Saronite in Scholazar Basin. |
